Spring is in the air – New England style

As I was walking across campus today in the blustery rain, a phrase came to mind; “It’s always darkest right before the dawn”. That is how spring comes to New England. There is no such thing as slipping into warm sun shiny days. Spring approaches with heavy rain showers and gusty winds. Swollen creeks and rivers, bursting with jammed ice, easily reach flood levels. Then the temperatures drop a few degrees and we get another 6 inches of snow.

However, the smells of spring are definitely in the air. The skunks are coming out of hibernation to begin their mating season. My dog got “skunked” last night. Sigh . . .
