Town Meeting Day

Today (the first Tuesday of March) is Town Meeting Day in Vermont.  Having never heard of such a day until I moved here, it must be a uniquelly New England event.

All schools (including Vermont Law School) and many businesses are closed for the day so that the citizens of each town may attend their town meeting to discuss the isues particular to that town.  Also, we vote for the town budget, the school budget, local officials, etc.

I have to confess that I did vote this morning, but did not stay for the meeting.  Am spending the day at home reading application files – which is much more important to this year’s applicant pool!  After the snow storms and lengthy power outages of last week, I appreciate a quiet, non-eventful day.
