Campus Vigil on Wednesday, October 13

VLS students, faculty and staff  are holding a vigil beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Oakes circular driveway on Wednesday, October 13.

In the past month, at least five teens have committed suicide after being persecuted because of their sexual orientation.*  The intimidation and other forms of homophobia that contributed to these deaths has effects beyond the states in which they occurred.  It affects our students, colleagues, friends, and relatives.

All are encouraged to show  support and compassion by participating for at least a portion of the October 13 vigil.  Join the gathering at 6:00 p.m. at the Oakes circular driveway and walk with us all to the South Royalton Green.   All are also invited to a potluck dinner on campus at the SoRo Café after the vigil walk to the Green.

Campus support is not be limited to the vigil. Throughout the day there will be a table in the Chase Breezeway where members of the campus community can sign a pledge to promote a safe, supportive environment at VLS.  And every day, we  should all speak out against homophobic actions and words.  By our silence we condone such actions.

Thank you for your support.

* The most widely publicized of these tragic deaths is that of Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi, who jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge after his roommate posted a video of Clementi on the internet.  Less publicized, but equally tragic, suicides have been committed by Billy Lucas (age 15) in Indiana, Asher Brown (age 13) in Texas, Seth Walsh (age 13) in California, and Raymond Chase at a college in Rhode Island.
