National Legal Writing Award for VLS Student

We are pleased to announce that Benjamin Leoni has been selected by the Burton Awards as a “2011 Distinguished Legal Writing Award” Winner.  The Burton Awards is the highest honor in legal writing.  The Legal Writing Program made Ben our school’s official nominee in January by nominating his article, “Resolving Disputes in the Northern Forest: Lessons From the Connecticut and Moosehead Lakes,” which was published in the Vermont Law Review.  Ben becomes the first VLS student to win this prestigious award.  Fifteen student authors are selected by a committee consisting of professors from Harvard, Penn and Michigan Law Schools.  The committee also includes luminaries from the bench such as Judge Posner and Judge Kozinski.  Last year’s winners came from law schools like Columbia, Emory, Georgetown, Iowa, Penn, and William & Mary.  Because of Ben, we now join the ranks of the winners.
The award winners will be feted at a black tie dinner at the Library of Congress on June 13.  This year’s guest speaker will be Justice Sonia Sotomayor.  Justice Stephen Breyer will accept the 2011 Book of the Year in Law Award.
